Getting Started with Software
So you're connected!
Getting started on the Internet isn't that hard if you have the right tools and if you know the proper settings. Listed here are some basic tools for use with Windows95/98/NT, UNIX, and the Macintosh, to get you started.
Please note, these are not the only products available, simply the ones we found to be most popular and user friendly.
Probably the most common task on the Internet is getting e-mail. It allows you to send and receive messages from across the globe within minutes. The following mail clients, are simple to use and simple to set up.
- Eudora Light for Windows and Macintosh

AAEC supports Netscape and Microsoft Web browsers. Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x or later versions are recommended for PC's. Netscape runs on Windows 95/98/NT and is included in the Apple Internet Connection Kit (requires System 7.5 or later). Internet Explorer is part of Windows 95/98/NT. The software requires about 5 to 20 megabytes of disk space.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) offers the ability for you to receive files and data from remote servers. Depending on what you are seeking, many servers allow the login of Anonymous users; Only your e-mail address is requested to login. Other machine may require a user to enter a specific password, and/or only give access to certain directories on the server.

The large majority of files on the Internet are stored on servers in a compressed format to save hard drive space. In order to be able to use the files after you receive them you must uncompress them. The tools below are used specifically for that purpose.
